What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are cloudy patches that develop on the lens of your eye. Cataracts can cause blurred or double vision, may increase light sensitivity and interfere with driving, especially at night. Without cataract surgery, millions of people around the world would be unable to see clearly.

The most common symptoms include:
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to glare
  • Colored halos around lights
  • Colors appearing more faded
  • Requiring brighter light for reading

When to Get Cataract Surgery

As we evaluate your eye health and vision, we'll carefully examine your lens for signs of cataract formation. If a cataract is detected and the clouding is causing visual disruption, our optometrist will refer you to a trusted surgeon for cataract surgery. Wear Eyewear - Orland Park will be there for you, providing pre and post cataract surgery care.

As the condition begins to seriously impair your vision and adversely affects your daily life, impacting your ability to read, drive, watch TV or recognize faces, you should seriously consider surgery.

  • Quick and convenient

This procedure can take just 30 to 45 minutes in an outpatient setting or hospital.

Removing cataracts can reduce the risk of eye inflammation and pressure inside the eye–a leading cause of glaucoma.

  • Rapid recovery time

Patients start seeing more clearly within a few days. Colors may seem brighter thanks to the new, clear lens.

My family and I have been having our eyes checked here for the last several years and it is hands do... wn the best optometrist experience we have ever had. Independent, clean, courteous, personable and professional.

Dr. Jones is awesome. I have an array of complicated health issues and it's always hard finding a ph... ysician that gets it. Dr. Jones gets it and makes you feel comfortable the whole experience. He was very thorough and understanding of my issues, making the visit a pleasant one. I don't gush for anybody, so this means a lot. I have had so many bad experiences in healthcare, but that never happened here. My vision can change frequently due to neuro issues and Dr. Jones has always found the right balance to help me get through this evolving condition. Thanks so much for everything.

I would highly recommend Wear Eyewear! Just had my first eye exam with Dr. Jones and he was super in... formative and provided great options for contacts and glasses. The staff was very friendly and was the best experience I have ever had at an eye center.

We are new patients and loved the atmosphere as soon as we walked in. My 5yo was due for a check up,... and Dr. Jones was the Patch Adams of Optometrists.

My husband and I have both seen Dr. Jones for several years. We cannot recommend him highly enough! ... He genuinely cares about his patients and is excited to explain the findings of his tests and the changes since the last visit. He makes a point of understanding the patients needs based on their lifestyle. He doesn’t try to sell glasses if they are not needed. And he is very personable! Thanks

My eye insurance changed and nobody local to me took the new insurance. My son (same insurance) reco... mmended Wear. He recommended Dr. Jones specifically. I saw Dr. Graff for my initial visit and then Dr. Jones for a follow-up visit. Office staff was very friendly, Dr. Graff was very efficient and fun and Dr. Jones took the time to review my new glasses v old glasses and gave me options on adjusting to the new script. I felt VERY comfortable and well cared-for and cannot recommend highly enough. Thank you!

I’ve been seeing Dr. Jones for over 10 years. He has a way of making you feel like you’re the mo... st important patient. I love the high-tech equipment that he uses to provide a thorough exam and that he explains everything to me in a way that makes sense. I’m severely near sighted And he always makes sure I understand what we’re talking about and that my vision is corrected in a way that I like. The office is small and everyone is really friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend Wear Eyewear. Oh! I forgot to mention they have an amazing selection frames. They range from basic to high-end brand names like Channel and Gucci plus a lot more.

My whole family looks forward to seeing Dr Jordan every year. He always remembers our names and hist... ory, what we enjoy to do on our spare time and makes us feel very comfortable in his office. He explains everything with comparisons and examples, and we leave knowing a little more about how eyes work ever year. The rest of the team is very helpful and have been there for years as well, they remember our tastes in frames and are very quick and knowledgeable with insurance questions.

I can tell Dr Jones loves his job, and that makes him a great eye doctor in my book. His enthusiasti... c explanations of how the eye works and what he’s looking for are very detailed yet easy to understand. The kids like him too, he puts them at ease with his sense of humor. I’ve been seeing him for years and recommended him to many of my family and friends.

Dr Jones is the most knowledgeable and patient doctor i have ever been to. I have been visiting eye ... doctors for the past 24 years and have never had a doctor who genuinely cares and is thorough in his exams as well as taking the time to explain everything to the patient. Everyone needs to quit going wherever you are currently going and come here!!!

I can't express enough, how great this Doctor is. My wife has been with him for years but I never h... ad much need for an eye doctor, I just got my eye exam & glasses from one of those national chains. But recently I had a scary issue that I felt needed the attention of a Eye Dr that could maybe go more in depth and that has all the necessary medical equipment. So this was the place based on what my wife told me. And I couldn't of been more satisfied with Dr.Jordan Jones. I was thoroughly impressed with the procedures done and the careful explaining he did for me. He made 100% sure I understood everything clearly and why the...how, what, when, why, was happening to me. When I was done with my visit I felt like I had a complete optical education tailored for my learning ability. He's referring me to a specialist now and of course he walked me through that process of what to expect from them and what they will probably do for me. Dr. Jones is just one of those human beings that has a really good energy about him.

Dr Jordan is incredibly funny and helpful and kind!!! He is also very knowledgeable and explains eve... rything thoroughly. The whole staff was very nice and patient. They have tons of glasses to choose from, and even the cheapest price frames (which I got) look very cute. I definitely would recommend this place to anyone and everyone, especially if you need to have a vision exam done.

Dr Jones is the best eye doctor our family has ever had! He is friendly , extremely thorough, and ta... kes the time to explain ANY questions you may have. He also knows how to connect on a personal level with people. We have an autistic son and he shows a tremendous amount of patience and kindness in dealing with him. We never want to see any other eye doctor for our needs!

Absolutely LOVE Dr. Jones! He was great with my children! My five year old was kind of nervous for... her first eye doc appt. but once Dr. Jones started talking to us she was fine while laughing and smiling! My 10 year old needs glasses...the way Dr. Jones explained to us how his eyes are working and why he needs glasses was so easy to understand! Thank you!

I absolutely love this office. I never have had such a great eye exam and Dr. Jones is wonderful an... d explains everything. Once I started going here I haven't gone anywhere else. Greg is great at listening to what type of glasses you want and shows you what would look good on you. Before, I was always returning to the optical place to have them fix the glasses (like screws falling out etc) and here I never do. They are really top of the line.

How to Prepare for Cataract Surgery

  • Apply antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eyedrops a few days before surgery if instructed to by your eye doctor
  • Arrange for a ride after the surgery, since you won’t be able to drive
  • Wash your face in the morning of the procedure and don’t wear eye makeup, strong perfumes or aftershave

What Happens During Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery removes your natural cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to improve and restore vision. This common and very safe procedure is performed by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) on an outpatient basis.

  • The eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) will perform cataract surgery on one eye at a time. That means that you will come in for another surgery on the second eye. The procedure is brief and typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.
  • The eye doctor will place drops into your eyes to numb them and dilate your pupils. Though you’ll be conscious during the procedure, you may be offered a sedative to help you remain calm. The eye surgeon will then remove your natural lens and replace it with the IOL. You should feel no pain or discomfort thanks to the anesthetic.

Cataract Surgery After-Care

Senior couple with glasses

After surgery, you may feel a bit drowsy as an after-effect of the sedative. Your eye doctor will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection, inflammation and to reduce pressure within your eye. The surgeon may recommend that you wear an eye patch for a few days after your surgery and the protective shield when you sleep during the recovery period. Make sure to avoid rubbing your eyes or touching them unless necessary.

A day after cataract surgery, we'll provide a post-operative eye exam to make sure that all is well. Your Orland Park optometrist will further perform a series of follow-up exams in the weeks and months to come. If determined that you require corrective lenses following your cataract surgery, we'll make sure you get the proper prescription.

Cataract Surgery Management FAQs

What are side effects of cataract surgery?

While side effects are rare, there are some issues that people commonly encounter in the days after surgery, as the eyes heal.

  • Dry eye
  • Feeling that something is in the eye
  • Blurry vision
  • Light sensitivity

If any of these side effects do not subside within a week or two, please contact Wear Eyewear - Orland Park.

Can I delay cataract surgery

You can delay cataract surgery, but keep in mind that your vision will likely worsen the longer you put off the procedure.

When is cataract surgery not recommended?

Cataract patients who also have age-related macular degeneration or retinal detachment may not respond well to cataract surgery and the new lens may not correct vision.

Can cataract surgery give me 20/20 vision?

If you had great vision before developing cataracts, it’s likely that cataract surgery will restore your sight. Moreover, the IOL inserted into your eye can be designed to correct refractive errors, providing you with clear vision.
